Schweigen Rangehood FAQs

What does schweigen mean?

Schweigen is the German word for 'silent'.

How powerful are the schweigen units?

Conventional rangehoods usually pull about 500 to 600 cubic metres. The schweigen system uses twin motors that pull 1100 to 1300 cubic metres.

Why is schweigen the most energy efficient rangehood on the market?

Schweigen rangehoods cost less than the average light globe to run.

How can you have a 'silent' exhaust system?

We started with a motorised fan from Germany (acknowledged as the quietest and most powerful extraction fans available)... and then did something quite revolutionary.

We removed the fan from the rangehood and attached it to the roof (or wall outlet) with a length of acoustic ducting. This means the motor (where all the noise comes from) is located outside. This design has been successfully implemented in ducted vacuum systems around the world.

Are schweigen rangehoods really Australia's quietest? How can you prove it?

The schweigen system is unique. Common sense dictates that placing the loudest part of the rangehood (the motor) outside will significantly decrease the noise level. For a demonstration, visit your local dealer.

What are the filters like?

The schweigen exhaust systems are fitted with commercial style stainless steel filters - like the ones you find in restaurants. These filters are heavier and more durable than domestic aluminium filters and are also 100% dishwasher safe.

What type of lighting do these units have?

All schweigen exhaust units have halogen downlights to illuminate the entire working area. The light emitted from halogen downlights is significantly brighter and clearer than regular bulb lights.

What about spare parts and service backup?

Schweigen have over 200 fully qualified servicemen throughout Australia. We also carry local stock of all spare parts.

Where is schweigen manufactured?

Schweigen products are made from a combination of European and Australian components. The main parts (motor system and electronics) are manufactured in Germany with additional components designed and manufactured in Australia to suit the local cooking environment.

I have heard other manufacturers claim their rangehoods are very quiet?

There is no other exhaust system on the market that comes close to the schweigen system for noise level. All traditional rangehoods have an internal motor, which means the more powerful the unit, the more noise generated.

I've heard of an in line motor system (or booster motor) - is this the same as the schweigen system?

Absolutely not. In line/ booster motors are still located inside the house, whereas schweigen units are located outside the house.

Can we fit the schweigen motor to our existing rangehood?

No, the safety protection engineered into the schweigen exhaust systems are patented and fitting the unit to a conventional rangehood would be dangerous.

Why hasn't anyone thought of this before?

Actually it took quite some time to finalise the design and concept and we needed to find the most reliable motor system available (we settled on the German made EBM units).
